CD Review: The Voxys - Bang Out of Order

Retro 60s psychedelic garage rock band who split their time between Dublin and New York and bear a far more obvious similarity to their influences - the Move, the Kinks or the Pretty Things - than current revivalists like the Coral. The Voxys are a lot more focused and consequently they bring the energy level up several notches as well. This tantalizingly brief ep, generously made available by the band for free download, leaves you wanting a whole lot more. It starts off with Sixth Floor, its catchy minor-to-major melody pulsing along on a fast shuffling reggaeish beat: “You’ll end up like your mother…less drunk and dead,” the singer deadpans, the band led by the bass in a sprint up the scale at the end. Track two, Uncle’s Gaff is fast and bouncy and sounds like the Jam if they’d been around in 1965, pubbing it up with Dick Taylor and Phil May. The title track punches along on a predictable one-flat3-4 hook; the last of the four tracks, Dirty Protest layers a ridiculously catchy, fiery guitar hook over some jangly, Byrdsy chord work and it’s flat-out gorgeous, all the way through to its surprisingly sunny chorus. Happily, the Voxys do frequent NYC gigs: they sound like they’d be a tremendously fun live band. Watch this space for details.

My first impression as a youth going to see bands in the NYC circuit was somewhat bland. I found myself mostly unimpressed in the Brooklyn area where apparently every gobshite with a pair of skinny jeans and an acoustic guitar is entitled to perform. Dreadful sessions of deep felt chords and endless boo-hooing about God knows what really don't seem right to me. I understand that it is each to it's own but, Jasus where is the substance?
Of course a band is just a moment of entertainment and that is that but how much can an entertainer really contribute to recession and lack of hope when the entertainer has something relevant to say and to do.
With the lack of football hooliganism and trainer culture a man has to find something to do and forget about the miserable world . Sinister escapism.
Be yourself and forget about what the ken of cunts dictate you. It's just like deciding by yourself to be an individual and stop following the rest of the yellow bellied sheep.
I can't even remember how many times I have stood in some pub queue while waiting to buy a fucken pint, listening to some skuzzy little blumfluff ironic moustache, in the faux effeminate style that has become hip amongst many of these gimps, complaining about irrelevant things. Praising equally irrelevant tendencies. Drinking equally irrelevant booze…
Then a band comes along with the proper minerals. The bleedin Voxys…The songs, the fucked up accents, the positive energy of their anger giving them a fearsome strength to slug it out with any cunt out there.
The Scratcher is one of the few places in NYC where they pour a proper Guinness. Why not for once say Go On and do it…in the infinite words of wisdom of Tommy Johnson (and NOT danny dyer)… "What else are you gonna do on a Sunday night? Sit in your fuckin' armchair wankin' off to Pop Idols? Then try and avoid your wife's gaze as you struggle to come to terms with your sexless marriage? Then go and spunk your wages on kebabs, fruit machines and brasses? Fuck that for a laugh! I know what I'd rather do. Manhattan away, The Voxys acoustic…. love it!"

Warhol's non-stop avant garde party is revived in a space decked out in salvaged, duct-taped mid-century modern couches, applique chairs and tin foil-clad walls. Behind the camo-colored bar (held up by office filing cabinets), doorless refrigerators stand in for shelves. The scene attracts everyone from stylish 24-year-olds to people who rocked-out in the original Factory. In the rowdiness-ready, plywood-clad basement, personal ads scrawled floor-to-ceiling illuminate the city's many fetishes.
